I think it is safe to say that when you hear February you think about love and Valentines Day, but did you know that February is also heart health awareness month?
When I did pageants, Go Red for Women was actually part of my platform! I wanted to help bring awareness toward the risk of heart disease in women since at the time one of my grandmothers had recently undergone a quadruple bypass! Did you know that 1 in 3 women are living with a form of cardiovascular disease? Cardiovascular diseases continue to be a woman’s greatest health threat (#1 killer of women… Yikes!). However, almost 80 percent of heart issues can be prevented!
The top 3 things we want to focus on when it comes to your heart health are:
1. Eating Smart!
This means a well balanced diet! I try to make sure when I sit down to eat that I make half my plate leafy greens and split the other half between my proteins and grains! I usually have fruit as a dessert. Besides your occasional “Treat” meal, you always want to ask yourself if the food you are putting into your body is going to benefit you. If your answer is no then you probably want to limit how much of that you are eating!
2. Exercise Regularly!
The heart is a muscle (pretty important one at that). So just like you train your arms at the gym to get stronger you want to be training your heart to make it stronger. A perk of working out your heart muscle is that it can be whatever you want!
Heavy weight lifting? Gets the heart pumping!
Zumba Dancing? Gets the heart pumping!
Spin Class? Gets the heart pumping!
Running? Gets the heart pumping!
Yoga? Gets the heart pumping!
Walking your dog? Gets the heart pumping!
So pick your favorite and get your heart pumping!
3. Focus on overall health!
This is major key alert! It is so easy to only focus on the eating and exercising part of your health, but it is as important, if not more important, to focus on your mental health! Even if it means skipping your workout one day to go home and relax with a good book! You want to make sure you’re getting enough sleep, managing stress, keeping mind and body fit, and
connecting socially with others!
